Great Britain's Drink Bill.

The national drink bill of Great Britain for 1896 has just been pub lisbed, and is a stupendous and alarming document. The total consumption of intoxicating liquors in 1896 amounts to £148,972,230. This makes a record in the British expenditure on drink. It is more than six and a half millions in ex - oess of the amount spent in 1895, the year that formerly has overtopped all others— the hitherto notorious 1876, when the amount was £140,288,759.
