President Kruger's five years' term as President of the South African Republic expires in April, 1898, and in spite of the recent announcement that he was suffering from Bright's disease and could hardly live more than 18 months, he intends to seek re-election.
In consequence of the attitude assumed by the President with reference to the report of the Indus trial Commission, his election will be opposed, his rival being Herr S. W. Burger, one of the unofficial members of the Executive Council.
