« JJe Temps states that the object of sending British gunboats to Boussa is in support of the claim of England to both banks of the Niger up to, say, a town in the central Soudan. The French Government ia contemplating the erection of fortifications at Bizerfca, a seaport on the Mediterranean, 87 miles from Tunis, and is displaying feverish eagerness over the work. Major Lugard, of the Norfolk Regiment, who is serving in West Africa under the Royal Niger Company, and three officers have been sent from Lagos to the hinterland of the territory. Additional British officers are to be sent, to the Gold Coast hinterland. Five hundred French soldiers, with 2000 native carriers, have started for Nikri, in the Lagos hinterland, West Africa. Some alarm is felt at the British concentration on the Niger.
