Trouble at Raratonga.

News from Rarataoga states that everything is upside down there. The Arikis are in arras, and have petitioned for the recall of the British Resident, Mr F. J. Moss, The reason given is that he is not suited to them. They want some one who will teaoh them to be just and good. They don't deny for a moment that Mr Moss has been teaohing them this

but they want some one also who will 41 bear with them in their ignorance of foreign customs."

There is a counter-petition from merchants and others praying that the prayer of the Arikis be tidt acceded to, and expressing full confidence in in Mr Moss as Resident.

The members pf the Island Parliament have also petitioned. Their reason is that Mr. Moss is angry with them, and " that is not pleasant to tbink of."

The real cause of the ferment is stated to be the bitter hostility of a few Europeans whom %Lt Moss offended in the course of his duty. The Parliament has been captured by the obstructors. Despatches by Mr Moss will supply full particulars to the Imperial Government, which will act through the Governor of New Zealand. — Press Association.
