The Rock the Tasmania Struck.

When the s.s. Weka last went oat to try to recover the mails from the Tasmania the sea was to rough to enable any work to be done, so Captain Nelaon determined to search for any rocks in the vicinity. A heavy bar of railway iron was slung crosswise over the stern and dragged along the bottom. When about three quarters of a mile from Table Cape, and on a line just opening up Portland Island light the drag met with an obstruction, which pulled the vessel up .with a sharp turn. The rounding of the vessel, however, released the drag, which was twisted

all out of shape. The obstruction is believed to be a pinnacle rock, but the sea was so rough that it could not be picked up again. The soundings round about showed only six to seven fathoms where seventeen are marked on the chart. This place is just inside of the usual track of vessels. The Government surveyors, Armstrong and Stevenson, remained behind at Whangawei to take advantage; of the first fine weather.
