Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1607. Weeds.
We beg to refer our Borough authorities to another column in which will be found an economical way of killing weeds. The question should be one of much interest to them, as they deserve credit for making an effort to improve our ways aa well as to beautify our surroundings but it must be patent to them that their good Work is not (or all time, and that whilst they are resting from their labours, a weed will be. working to transform the gravel walks into a waste of green growth, the old fashioned style of endeavouring to clean out paths and roads by hand labour and with pick and shovel is not only most temporary but expensive, and the clearing in the old manner would speedily end the splendid appearance of our footpaths. As it is not the duty of the Borough to raise a crop in the public thoroughfares there Ban be nd danger in their testing the efficacy of thi'3 copper solution. Our report expresses fear of corn being damaged by too strong a use of the mixture, but it emphasizes the fact that the Weeds die. This is just what we want, some method to destroy lbs weeds Without destroying our pathways. \Ve credit our Council with the earnest desire to improve our town, and we therefore do not doubt a fair trial Will be given to this plan, tn all outlay upon our recreation grounds, the first cost may bo reckoned as of small ranment, as that is generally not incurred until the funds are in hand, but the most difficult business has to be faced as to how to keep the improvements made, in first-class order, and, as each year, walks are made and gravelled, so will the cost of the up keep increase, and any discovery tending to lessen this expense practically enables a local body to do so much more improvement. During this last twelvemonths great improvements have been made in Victoria park, a cycling track and a path through the grounds having been gravelled. As, on the score of expense, the metalling is very thin, and no proper, or usual, foundation has been laid, it is evident that it will not be long .before the weeds attempt to usurp the position, and the fight with them will be disastrous to the track, and to the funds, if the old manner is still retained to subdue them. Thu3 we should hail with pleasure the discovery of this Frenchman, and adopt it.
