Foxton State School.

There was quite a stir at the Foxton State School on Thursday ifternoon as the members of the committee went there to distribute r .be prizes gained by the scholars at be last Inspector's examination. Advantage was taken of Mr Fred. Piraoi's visit to the town to ask him to present the prices which he kindly consented to do. The Chairman explained to the scholars, who were assembled in the head teacher's room, tha object of he meeting, mentioning it was but he repetition of an annual custom, *od one which perhaps was not a -egular fixture, as money was noalways in hand at the time the prizes were gained. This year, however, >wing to the able assistance of the ■scholars at the Record Reisrn celebration, funds oame in earlier, and hus the prises were obtained sooner. Ha mentioned that Mr Fred Pirani who was our representative on the Education Board and a member of (he House of Representatives was o resent, at the request of the committee, and would hand the scholar? heir books, bat before doing ho he would call upon him for a few eraark*. Mr Pirani expressed the pleasure he felt at being present and said be gladly aeoeeded to the committee** request. He explained to the scholars the impossibility of all being at the top of the class and pointed out that f, during the year those who had no prizes to receive had really worked 'heir best they had nothing to regret. It was evident that those who occupied high places had many difficulties to contend with, and it was not those on top who enjoyed the pleasantest lives. To those who were prize winners he drew attention that they were entering upon a course which was most praiseworthy out they must remember that it also ■ntailed extra duties, and as they had so far proved their superiority they should be ready to assist tbeir schoolmates, and endeavour still to ke<![; tli A lead in whatever path ihroujjh <?ft? they chnae. Mr Pirani then handed the following scholar* tbeir prizes : —

Standard Vl— Edgar Gillesple. Standard V.— James Fame ; Nellie Harris. Standard IV.— Fred. WaUl j Annie Collins. Standard lll.— Bishop Langdon ; Hetty Morley* Standard ll.— John Westwooct; Rose Withers. Standard I — AH equal in marks, William Morton, Fred. Robinson, William Rowland ; Adelaide Blake, Amy Harris, Eleanor Cook and Barbara Robertson. Rev. R. Young then thanked tit ?ir*ai for bis attendance, and baring urged the scholars to all tp endeavour to come out on top in the struggle of life, in which, he said, there was plenty of room, though balf-way there was sure to be met the mass of the struggling mediocrity, so that they might prove a credit to the i school and town. Cheers were given for Mr Pirani, Committee, Chairman and Teaohers, and thus a pleasant function was brought to an end. The attention of Mr Pirtni wai directed to the leaks in the roof of the building and also the need of some fresh paint in the class rooms, and he promised that these matter! should be laid before the next meet' ing of the Board.
