To Dress Sheep Skins For House Mats.

The first matter to ba carefu 1 about is to remove every fragment of flesh adhering to the skin ; usa a knife for this, but be careful in no way to cut or bruise the inner skin. When you have fleshed it, dry the skin well with towels, and lay it out on a flat board. Now. have some hot water and soft soap and a bard brush, and thoroughly scrub the in side of the skin. Wash it clean and have crushed ready by you a mixture of 2oz. salts of tartar and loz. of ammonia, which sprinkle on the skin from time to time as you will got rid of the grease. When the skin has been well scrubbed, give it a thorough rubbing with dry sawdust.. Let it remain then for a few hours before it goes into the tanning pickle. To make the pickle, take of fine oatmeal lib., corrosive sublimate Boz , saltpetre 40z., vinegar 1 gallon. Boil the vinegar, and pour it over the other ingredients, stirring it well and quickly the whole time you aye pour* ing. As soon as it is cold it is ready. Immerse the skin in it, and let it remain lying in it for at least 2 days ; a very large skin should remain in longer. When time is up remove the skin from the pickle, and stretch it carefully and tightly over boards or stretcher till it is dry. While the drying proceeds you must comb out the wool till you get it into proper order. Other skins besides those of sheep may be tanned in this manner. It will take about a week to make it fit for U36.
