The Vitriol Case.

Mr Tole, Crown Prosecutor, in opening tbe case against Thomas Carrol, said the accused was a chemist, and had carried on business at Bourke, New South Wales v He was there acquainted with Miss Alice Luke, and apparently desirous of marrying her. The girl oame to Auckland with the intention of living witb her parents, and was determined not to renew her acquaintance with the prisoner. She also made the acquaintance of Jewell, and it had been arranged that they should be married. Accused arrived from Sydney and had an interview with Miss Lake. She told him that- she would have nothing to do with him ; that she had formed other attachments He told her that if Bhe persisted in marrying Jewell he wonid make things very uncomfortable for Jewel!. Miss Lake and Jewell proceeded to Paeroa. Aocused followed and became very violent. Jewell iind Carroll got into an argument. Jewell offered to fight it out, but Carroll refused. Jewell suggested that they should go and ask the girl which of them she would have. They went, and Miss Lake told accused' she would have nothing to do with him. Later on, accused came into the room where Jewell and Miss Lake were sitting, pulled out a bottle and threw its contents on Jewell, a portion of the acid going on his forehead, Jewell Buffered great pain, and was disfigured for life. Accused burst out crying, and said he was very sorry for Miss Lake ; he hoped he had not injured her, and he ? -was sorry he had not thrown the acid at Jewell with better effect. - Press Association.
