Frozen Mutton.
«. Writing under date 22nd January, Messrs W. Weddell & Co, thus refer to New Zealand frozen mutton : — "The frozen mutton market at' the present time is in a most demoralised condition. Arrivals from New Zealand for the paat fortnight amount to 126,500 carcases, and it is hardly surprising to find that prices are easier. Canterbury's alone show any degree of firmness, although it is with great difficulty that holders oan make up to B£d per lb even for the best. Ordinary descriptions or outside weight, however, are worth no more than BJd to B|d per lb. Generally speaking the Oan terbury s now on the market are not up to the usual standard of quality, and many buyers who use
them regularly in their shops are complaining. Secondary grades are indeed in a bad way, some holders in their anxiety to sell are practically taking any price buyers like to bid. The Sraitbfield quotation for best Siuth'ands and Dunedins is 2sd to 3d per lb, add for plainer lots 2fd per lb Aucklands, Napiers, and We'liogtons are being freely offered hy various salepmen, and although 2£d tn 2sl per lb has been made for s m a , a larare number have been sold j a-- low as 2JI to 2fl. Old ewes are i d fficulc to move at 2£i per lb. The i m irkec closes very irregular."
