Death of Blondin.
M. Charlea Blpqdin wu the moit famous tight rope -walker that $he world has ever teen. At far back as 1862 he achieved a record in walking oa a rope 249 yards ill length at a height of 170 feet from the ground. This- feat was performed at the Crys* tat Palace, Sydenham* in the presence of enormous crowds. On Jane 80. 1669, Blondui walked for a distance of 1200 feet -ftcroas the river at the Niagara Falls at a height of 100 feet above the torrent. This performance he accomplished in the presence of 25,000 persons, and on the 4th July following he crossed blind fold, trundling a wheelbarrow. Blondin accepted a proposal that he should walk on a cable from the first platform of the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the central dome of the Exhibition for a wager of £4000, but this was not permitted by the Exhibition authorities. Blondin's iron nerve and magnificent physique carried him through many a triumph, but in the last years; of his life he was partly blind and almost wholly deaf. Blondin visited New Zealand many years ago, and gave several performances.
