A Suspicious Character.
The Post reports that on Wednesday the police took into oustody a man named Herbert Allandale on a charge of heing an idle and disorderly person, without visible lawful means of Bupporfc.' According to the •vidence given by Detective Neill when the case came on at the Magistrate's Court this morning, Allandale has very recently been released from gaol, and is a dangerous character— so much so that as soon as ha was Noticed about town a detective was told off to keep an eye on him, and hia movements in the vicinity of several of the burglaries that have occurred here have been looked upon as decidedly suapioious. He has not been known to do any work since his arrival here a few weeks ago. When arrested a prescription for a peculiar Indian drug concoction was found in bis possession. According to medical testimony, a piece of paper soaked in this preparation will smoulder almost imperceptibly, and, if placed in a room where there are any persons, it will sap their will-power and consciousness without disturbing or warning them in any way. After hearing this evidence the Bench (Messrs -Or F. Richardson and A. Scoul6try Juatioes), granted tho appiication of Inspector Pender for a remand till Monday next.
