Foxton Borough Council.

A special and ordinary meeting of the above was held at the Library Buildings yesterday at noon. Present— The Mayor (G. Nye, Esq.), and Ora, T. Weatwood, E. Osborne and P. Hennessy. The Mayor-elect (J. R. Stanaell, Esq.), was also present for installation. INSTALLATION OF.MAYOB. The retiring Mayor said he would like to make a few remarks for per haps the last time. When he took office they had a debt of £800, but with the help of the Council that debt had been cleared off, and the Borough was now in a good financial position. It was not to serve his own ends that he had occupied the position as Mayor, but thought it hia duty as a citizen to come forward for the benefit of the town. Mr Nye also spoke of the different work 3of importance that had been carried out daring his term of office, and mentioned the goodwill that had always existed between himself and fellow-councillors. He would also like to personally thank the Town Clerk for the help received and for the manner in which he had carried out his duties, saying that anything Mr Gibson had to do of an unpleasant nature was entirely at the direction of the Council. The clerk then read the announcement of the election of the Mayorelect (J. R. Stansell, E?q ) Cr Westwood proposed the following resolution, That this Council place on record the untiring and valuable services of the late Mayor (George Nye, Esq.) to this Borough, | and regret his retirement from publio life. «i Seconded by Cr Henno3sy. The proposer and seconder eulogised the services rendered the Borough by the late Mayor, the latter mentioning that anything lhafc had occurred in the heat of debate would be forgotten. After Cr Osborne had spoken, the motion was carried unanimously. The retiring Mayor then introduced the newly elected Mayor to the Council, who made the usual deolaration and took his seat. The Mayor said he wa3 very pleased to bear tha flattering remarks that had been made by Councillors in regard to the late Mayor, «s he believed they were thoroughly deserved. He trusted with the help of the Councillors to carry out his. duties to the best of his ability for the benefit of the Borough as a whole, and with Councillors' help much could be done. Now that a Government supporter was sleeted for the district, he believed in an attempt being made to get a bridge over the river at either Wirokino or Shannon, aleo the good to the town the acquiring of the Motoa Estate would be if purchased by the Government and cut op into sections. The late Mayor deserved credit for getting the land at the Heads cut up lor the Sanatorium, but he could not help thinking that the Land 3 Department had been exceedingly dilatory in carrying out the sale. Re also pointed out that the flax on the esr tate now so useful for the mills work* ■ ing in the district should be conserved in place of being destroyed ' for the purpose of grass growing. He was also in favour of procuring some better metal for metalling tho footpaths in the town. He pointed out that he thought some arrangement might be substituted for the present plan of keeping the main roads in order, by letting the repairing by tender, bat that was a matter for futur6|Consideration. Or Hennessy weloomed the Mayor ** to the Counoil, and hoped that all the matters mentioned by the Mayor TT^uld come to pass. Ore Westwood and Oaborne also Welcomed the Mayor, the former saying that the remarks of the Mayor in regard to conserving the flax met with his approval entirely. OKMNARY BUSINESS. Or Hennessy brought under the ' " notice of the Council the bad condition of No. 6 Line, caused by the heavy traffic over the road, the creamery suppliers being aff.ctod by tha state it .was in. He suggested ihat flax or ti-tr.ee should be placed IT the oarfc-rtttß, as the continued

filling up by sand wa* of no use. The Inspector of Works and tha Mayor agreed to inspect the road that afternoon and see what could be done. Propossd by Cr FJenneasy, seconded by Cr Westwoofl, That the ordinary meeting of the Council be called for Wednesday, the 23rd of Dec, 1896, instead of the January meeting, and tenders be called for ranging and carting, to be in by that meeting. Carried. Proposed by Cr Westwood, seconded by CjC I-J^nnessy, That the Mayor sign the Council's cheques in place of George Nya (ex-Mayor.) The Council then adjourned.
