Mayoral Elections.

Yesterday very great interest was shown in the election of Mayor, and within fifteen of the available votes were polled. Great good feeling was shown throughout the contest, and at the close of the poll and afcer both candidates had thanked their supporters, they shook hand*. The one pleasing feature in this election wan the sincerity of those who promised either candidate their support, as each candidate received the number of votes he reckoned on, tbe upset in the calculation of the losing candidate being the number who polled The result was made known very shortly after six o'clock by Mr Gibson, who announced that Mr Stan sell had received 69 votes and Mr Oaborne 44, Mr H. D. Bell defeated Mr George Fisher for the Wellington Mayoralty, with a majority of 887 votes, the : numbers being Bell, 1299; Fisher, 852. The Mayoral election at Palmer* ston North resulted as follows : — W. T. Wood, 344 ; H. Haydon, 185.
