The Government has acceded to the request that many of the army officers be * allowed to temporarily attach themselves to the Niger company. Mr Chamberlain, speaking at Birmingham, said the increase , of German trad a to the colonies had on percentage increased greatly in the first half of the decade, but had not increased in the latter half. A spy who joined the United Irishmen Party states that Carney, Tynan, Lyman and 801 l were prominent officers of the Secret Association. He revealed the secrets and passwords, and forwarded documents to the British Government. The object of the Scoiety, he ; declared, was to establish an Irish Republic by revolution, and he further stated that large sums of money were being collected to educate dynamiters to assist in outrages. At one meeting, he said, there were 600 delegates, and two Australians attended a Chicago Convention in 1895. Bell, it is said, became acquainted with Tynan in 1882. The Government spy joined the camp in New York, and enrolled Mearna and Nolon, who were concerned in the explosion in Dublin. Bell has been committed for trial. The Anglo-American agreement stipulates that the Venezuelan Arbitration shall be finished by February. Frozen meat is unchanged. Hemp is firm— good Wellington at £16 ss. Butter is dull at 989 to 104s ; Danish unchanged.
