Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, OCT. 81, 1896. The Mail Services.
For some weeks there has been a good deal of interest excited as to the way the Government would get out of the difficulty of the rival coach routes to Foxton. The inhabitants much preferred the morning service, and visitors liked the afternoon running ; but we think the greater number of signatures to the petitions were on the one asking for the morning service. It is therefore very gratifying to be informed on the best authority that neither service will be lost to the town, as the Government, instead of cutting the Gordinn Knot have wisely untied it, by accepting both tenders— one in the morning from Foxton to Levin, and one from Shannon to Foxton at midday. As wo have so often urged the claims the inhabitants of this district have on the consideration of the Government, we should be want* ing in gratitude did we not accord them our thanks for this decision, which we think is both wise and just. A large sum of money has never yet been spent in getting a mail to this town, and the slight increase now agreed upon is well within the revenue obtained from the district. We are glad that by the arrangement now made no one will suffer by the convenience of others being studied, and the people will appreciate the two services being supported by the Postal Department. If one was inclined to be disagreeable no doubt many sharp thing? could be eaid, but as we are otherwise disposed we are very pleased to notice that the wishes of the inhabitants are at last being taken into consideration, and as a straw serves to show the way the wind blows, so this acceptance of both tenders by the Government can be taken as an indication of their greater interest in this district.
