Davidson Becnred four first prizes with his Cotawold eheep. The shearing competition was won by C C. Rogers. Mr B. Cobb'a team won the tandem driving competition. Somnuß again secured the ohampionship for stallions over four years. Messrs Abraham and Williams hold a stook sale at Otaki on Wednesday. Mrs J. H. Hankins secured first for a pair of harness horses under 12 hand 8. The wood chopping contest on the second day was won by H. Brigga. Messrs Abraham and Williams hold a •took sale at Oolyton on Tuesday, and at Palmerston on Thursday. The Manawatu A. and P. Show was a great ahooess in point of exhibits, but the weather was wretched. In Ayrshire cattle Mr A. Honore's bull, oalved prior to Ist July, 1894, was highly commended. The Ven. Archdeacon Fanconrt is paying the district a visit, and is the guest of the Rev. Rs Young. The first prize for five fat wethers over 18 and under 30 months waß secured by Mr H. P. Davidson. Mr Edmund Osborne announces bis intention of becoming a oandidate for the office of Mayor. A requisition having been handed Mr Stanaell asking him to allow himself to be nominated for Mayor, he has consented, and advertises the fact. Mr Langdon, the Manager of the Motoa Estate offers a reward of £6 for the discovery of the person who tampered with the Kari Eari floodgate on Thursday or Friday last. Wo have on good authority the statement that very shortly flax will commence to rise in value. This should be considered by our millers before entering into too large oon tracts. Owing to the size of All Sainte' Church it has been decided to allot the space to the members of the congregation, who will be admitted by ticket only, to the Induction service on Monday evening. We understand these tickets can be obtained op application from Mr Easton, the churoh warden. In Central Africa many of the women look like an artist's palette, covered with colours of different sorts* They stain their hair and their eyebrows with indigo, and blacken their eyelashes. The Feleton ladies spend many hours on their toilet, paying special attention to their eyebrows, which they are in the habit of pencilling very carefully. A Portsmouth provision 'dealer writes to an English paper that, on unpacking a case of eggs from Canada last week, he found one bearing the following inscription in lead pencil :— " July, '96.— 1f any nice young lady should by chance receive this egg will she please write (for matrimonial purposes) to J. C; Thornton, Seaforth, Ont., Canada ?" A New York doctor, who has made a speoial study of coffee drunkenness, says his observation has shown beyond question the chronic coffee poisoning is much more common than is generally supposed. The symptoms are usually confounded with alcoholic disturbance, because coffee dysi pepsia bears a striking ressmblanoe to alcoholic dyspepsia. There is the same disgust for food, morning expectoration of mucus, and marked anorexia. This disgust for food increases in severe oases until the patient can only take coffee, or bread soaked in coffee. Nausea follows, and many of the other ills that flesh is heir to. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a late resident of Palmerston, on a charge of wife desertion. His wife reported to the police that at the beginning of last week he said he was going to Wellington on business, and left her at her father's till he returned. During her absence he went home, paoked up his goods and left by Tuesday's train for Wellington, taking passage by the Talune for Sydney. His shop was recently destroyed by fire, and it is alleged he has taken the insurance money, some £70, with him. his wife and two children being unprovided for. — Times. Dr Frithoff Nansen and his companions made their triumphal entry into Christiania on the 9th September, the town, being gaily decorated in their honour. An immense crowd awaited the arrival of the party on board tho Fram, whioh was escorted by j about a hundred other vessels. Dr Nansen and his companions were received at the oastle by the King and the Crown Prince, who gave a gala dinner in their honour. Dr Nansen has had the Qrand Cross of the Order of St. Olaf conferred upon him. The Otaki Mail, writing on the proposed referendum as to the site for County offices, says : — When Councillor Venn pro* posed the motion it waa distinctly understood that Otaki, Levin, and Shannon were the towns between whioh the issues were to lie. .-The Chairman himself wa» of this opinion till quite a recent date, When a new phase of the question was presented to him by those interested in the matter. The necessary papers had been printed with the provisions of the three above mentioned towns, but a day or two later it was deoided to strike out Shannon, the reason of which will, of course, be obviouß to all."
