BONQOTEA C.C. v. FOXTON C.C. The opening challenge match of the season was played between these cluba on Saturday last in the woolshed paddock of Herrington, kindly granted for the occasion by the Messrs Robinson. The weather was about as bad as it could be — beastly, in fact, a strong, bitterly cold wind blowing all the time ; bat the players seemed rather to enjoy it, and the onlookers pretended to do the same. The game was a hollow affair from start to finish, and resulted in an easy win for the visitiors by an innings and two runs. On the whole the Rongotea players showed very fair form, the bowling of Broughion (captain), especially being very effective, and their fielding all round was good. The batting of the local team was very feeble, and their fielding (as a charitable onlooker remarked) 41 a lump off." In these there is certainly great room for improvement. On the other hand the bowling was very fair, and if the fielding and batting had been anything like as good the resulc might have been different. We are glad to learn that the local men have made up their minds to go in for regular practice, and if they have grace given them to stick to their resolution we are satisfied that they will be well able to hold their own and more against any team they may have to meet.
