The Hawke's Bay Herald says Mr Wilson, who is one of the most popular membero on the Opposition side of the House, leaves for Scotland after the general election, and will be absent from the colony for some months. Mr Wilson was presented with a silver tea kettle and spirit stand bearing the following inscription :— " J. G. Wilson, M.H.R., from friends in Parliament on bis temporary retirement from politics, 1896."
The Timber Conference Btatea the wood pnlp industry could not be carried on at a profit under present oiroumstances. A pulp-mill to make 10 tons of pu p per day would cost, erected in New Zealand, from £30,000 to £40,000, and as the pulp when manufactured would have to be shipped to foreign markets, where labour and the cost of machinery would be considerably cheaper than here, its manufacture in this colony could only result in a lobs.
" Fancy what farming doe 3at Jersey" writes Mr William Courtney, of New Plymouth (who is now in England endeavouring to induce settlerß to come out to this colony) in a letter to the Taranaki Herald. 11 Their land naturally is not near y as good as ours from town to Waitara, yet from a little island just about the size of from New Plymouth to Waitara and seven miles back from the sea, they export £400,000 worth of potatoes. I felt it was a good object, lesson. A similar state of things exists at Guernsey. You see no poverty and no drunkennesss in either of these islands, so different to England and Scotland."

On the 2nd of next month the Bishop, accompanied by several clergy, including the Vicar of Pa'merston North and his curate, will visit Foxton and hold a service in the Church, in which the Rev. B. Young will be inducted as Vicar. There will be a confirmation during the visit of the Bishop, of Maori candidates. A social will be held on the Monday or Tuesday, for the purpose of welcoming the new Vicar, and it is expected theßishop will be present and speak on the occasion. The Oroua Polo Club held its annual meeting at Whyte's Hotel yesterday. All the old officers were re-elected with the exception of Mr Maclean, who had resigned, and Mr Baldwin was elected to the oom- ' mittee in his stead. Two new members, Messrs Baldwin and Webb were elected. The Rongotea erioketers drove into town at 11.30 this morning- The match mil be played in the Messrs Robinson's woolshed paddock. The wife of Mr John Fowler, of the village settlement, Levin, died suddenly last night from heart disea?e. As she had had no medical advice lately, though had previously been under Dr Lewers' care, the Coroner was communicated with, but under the circumstances he did not consider an enquiry necessary. At the Committee meeting of the Foxton Racing Club but night the programme was received approved by the Metropolitan Club, and will be advertised in Tuesday's issue. Mr Nixon, owing to his departure from Foxton resigned from the Committee and Treasurership, but consented to remain as timekeeper. Mr Little was eleoted Treasurer. It may interest our readers to hear about an old identity, Robert Stanley. He has lately been boarded out at Palmerston but having taken a freak that clothes were unnecessary articles, he burnt them and started for the country attired as Nature had dressed him. After a four mile chase the constable secured him and the result has been the consignment of poor Stanley to the lunatic asylum.
