A Misadventure.
• — r. ' Old adages are sometimes but a broken reed to put one's trust in. This was exemplified in the case of five " good men and true " who assisted a man to pull a totara log out of the river mud, the other morning. " A pull altogether " is instilled" upon us as a means of success, but when these five colonials pulled, the rope broke and two got precipitated into the mud, and then, asi the song would say, " there were three." But the three pulled the other two out and then " there were live" who after splicing the rope, uot the " main brace " as sailors like to when they go in for exercise, had another pull, and another break, placiDg two others in the mud, leaviog only one clean. To make the story short another rope of exceed* ing strength was put round the log in which every faith was placed by the whole five, but, sorry its a fact, but 'tis true, the rope slipped off the log, and the crew, every man Jack, or whatever other Christian name v they may have been given, went into that mud. Indomitable perseverance tells in everything and before they left the log was brought to shore.
