Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, SEPT. 16, 1896. The New Electorate.
The question of the position of the chief polling place for the new electorate will soon be disposed of, but we hope before it is, the claim Foxton ha 9 to be chosen will be duly considered by the authorities. It will be seen by a glance at the map showing the boundaries of this electorate that Marton stands almost on the north end and immediately on the eastern boundary, whereas Foxton has the most thickly populated area around it, and, to the larger number of voters it would be the most access™ ible. Out of a population of over 8000 in the electorate, there are, taking the Borough of Marton into consideration (which totalled at the last census 1151 souls), oirty 1900 persons around it, north of the Ban* gitikai River. The four of the Ridings of the Manawatu County, to the residents of which Foxton is more reachable, number 2053 personß, whilst within a radiua of Foxton, including the inhabitants of the Borough (which total 1100) there are, in addition to the 2053 persons, another 4000 persons. The Government, however, are not given to inquire minutely into facts, their pleasure, or the pleasure of certain of their supporters generally being given effect to, than the convenience of the public, and co probably Foxton will again be ignored by a Liberal Ministry.
