« (Before B. L. Stanford, Esq., 9.M.) CRIMINAL. William Coombes was charged with accepting a certain bribe, to wit a cheque for £33, on the 11th July, 1896, from one George Johnston Scott as a consideration to abstain from giving evidence or information to the police in a certain case of sheep stealing, which was then about to be preferred against one Herbert Scott, thereby attempting to defeat the course of justice. Mr Moore appeared for the prosecution and Mr Hankins for defendant. By arrangement an adjournment was granted for a week, bail being allowed in one surety of £250, and accused's own recognizance of £250- Mr James Mowlem became security. George Johnston Scott was charged that on or about the 11th July, 1896, he did dissuade or attempt to dissuade one William Coombes by means of a certain bribe to the amount of £33 from giving evidence or information to the police in a certain case of sheep stealing which was about to be preferred against one Herbert Scott, thereby attempting to defeat the course of justice. The same bail was allowed and the case remanded for a week, Mr John Mowlem becoming surety. William Coombes and George Johnston Scott were then charged that they did on or about the 10th July conspire to obstruct, prevent, pervert or defeat the courso of justice the said G. J. Scott giving and the said W. Coombes receiving a certain cheque for £33 in consideration that the said William Coombes should not indentify and recognise certain sheep skins which he then believed to have been stolen from him, and which one Herbert Scott was suspected of having stolen. No bail | was required, and the charge was adjourned for a week. — Standard.
