The Drowning of Father Newport.
Father Newport, who was drowned on Sunday afternoon at Dunedin, «m a good swimmer, and loßthis life in saving one of the boys, having exhausted hia strength in keeping the boy afloat. Having got him on the boat, he kept him there for the three-quarters of an hour which elapsed from the time of the accident till the arrival of the rescuing party. It is almost certain that there was no life in Father Newport's |body when it was picked up, as one of Dr Cunningham's ambulance class was on board the rescuing boat and took the proper measures to restore animation, and these efforts were r iept up until the doctor's arrival. Father Newport was bora in Jtafclin, and pursued his philosophic aai and theological studies in Paris, After being elevated to the priesthood* he proceeded to Mauritius, where he. laboured until hia health broke down under the trying climate, and was compelled to recuperate in Australia. edin, some 16 years ago, and Was parish priest at Gore for some years. He was 48 yean of age and was in the twenty-fourth year of his priesthood.
