A Start.
The meeting held on Thursday morning of most of the business people waa a start in the right direction to create an interest in the development of our town and beaoh. No person or district can afford to hide their light under a bushel, and when a good thing is held it ie by far the wisest plan to let it be known. After some years talk we have a prospect of the Heads being made available for visitors, and probably this might have been hastened had some sort of organization been established previously. What is everybody's business is no body's business, and it is feared that the fullest advantages of Mr Ho wan 's push in building a steamer suitable for the passenger trade, would be lost, unless a combined plan was adopted to make clear to visitors what opportunities would be held out to them to pay this town, and the ocean beach a visit. The committee, which we hope to see largely added to next week, is not called together to aid any one man's speculation, but to consider and assist any proposal that may be made to attract visitors to our town. It will not only be profitable to ourselves, if the committee goes to work the right way, but will be extremely convenient to those who desire to come this way, as the committee, keeping record of all business of interest of the travelling public, could answer queries without lo3s of time and with authority. When the Wbarangi township is
leased, some few houses Will probably be erected on • spec ' to let, these the committee would record ; the running arrangements of the steamer would be mentioned ; the cost of conveyance by coach, dray or horse could be ascertained ; and charges for board arranged for. The longer you examine the matter, the more necessary that some such committee should be set up becomes apparent. We do not purpose to go further into what can be done just now, as a conference frequently alters views, but we have shown enough to prove, what might be done under proper management.
