Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 1896. Zanzibar.
The Sultan,, Seyyid Hamed bin Thwain, who has just died, succeeded his uncle on sth March, 1898. At one time Zanzibar included in its territories a long stretch of the East coast of Africa from Warsheikh in the north to Tanghi Bay in the South, extending ten miles inland. In 1890 this strip was ceded to Germany, but in the same year a British Protectorate was proclaimed over what remained of Zanzibar, viz., the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, and a ten-mile coast line from Wanga to Kipini, together with the islands of Lamu, Manda, and Palta, and the ports of Kisraayn, Brava, Merka, Magdisho, each with a radius of ten miles, and the port of Warsheikh with a radius of five miles. In this deal it would appear that Britain had got the best of that " made in Germany." The Powers haying treaties with Zanzibar continue to retain what are known as extra-territorial rights. Early in 1898 the Sultan made a decree transferring to the British Consular Court all cases in which British subjects may be concerned against subjects of His Highness, either as plaintiffs or defendants. The city of Zanzibar, on the island of the same name, is the largest in East Africa, and possesses a magnificent harbour. The population is chiefly negroes, and the dominant power- is the Arab.
