Supreme Court.
The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court concluded on Wednes* day. Hildus Bergersen, charged with stealing sheep at Fitzherbert, was found nob guilty and discharged. Herbert Scott, who last week was found guihy in connection with the same offence, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. ' The charge against Hilders Ber gersen of having stolen ten sheep, the property of William Farmer, of Fitzherbert, od the 6th July was heard in the Supreme Court before the Chief Justice. Mr Gully appeared for the Crown, and Mr Baker, of Palmerston North, for the accused. Mr Baker stated the accused was without means, and had therefore been unable to procure witnesses. The Chief Justice could not understand the matter being brought up at this stage, unless it was for the purpose of creating an effect upon the jury. The matter ought to have been mentioned last week, when the
case was before the Court. The oir* cumstances were similar to those related when the charge against Herbert Scott, who was found guilty on the same charge last week, was heard. The jury returned a verdiot of not guilty.— N.Z. Times.
