At that time Mr Bowles was on the staff of the Morning Post, and it was through a little difference with the editor of that paper that he was led to independent enterprise. Sir Algernon Borthwick declined to print one or two of Mr Bowles's articles as being, too outspoken, whereupon Mr Bowles swore that he would have a paper of his own. He had three hundred pounds— his ' Owls ' (two of whom are now Ambassadors) stood by him to a man — so he went to work, and in three weeks' time the new paper was launched under the title of Vanity Fair. It had an immediate success, and became the model — perhaps I should say the despair— of all subsequent Society papers^'
