Chess and Draughts Club.

» M _ The chess match between the local Ciub and Palmerston was played by wire on Thursday evening. The players were accommodated at the Telegraph Office, and the result of the match was a win for Foxton by four games to two. The home team assembled at 7 o'clock sharp, coming with Ihe intention of playing out every game, though they might hive lasted till late on Friday. morning. But as the Palmerston Club desired to limit play to 1 o'clock, it was decided to give in, as also to their wish to toss for the first move (the Foiton players would have preferred to have had the return advantage given to them by the different boards in the former match.) Mr Whitehead played Mr Gower over the board, as he happened to be in Foxton at the time. Mr Gower won his game early in the evening. Messrs Johnston and Fraßer, at No. 2 and No 4 boards, also won somewhat easily. Messrs Gillespie and McLennan, at No. 5 and 6 boards lost somewhat easily. At No. 1 board the game went inconveniently, the Palmerston i player being in default more than once, and at 12 o'clock suddenly demanded to be set frae with a draw, as he did not care to stay later ; and so he did without permission from his opponent in Foxton. This action on his par', according to all known laws of chess as set forth in print and according to all other rules as to games, gave the gama to Foxton. The players at Foxton were most kindly supplied with refreshments by Mr Curtis, and eDJoyed a very pleasant evening. The local men had a contest at draughts with the Moutoa Club last , night, which resulted as anticipated, owing to the absence of the beet
