Fires.
• On Thursday evening at a quarter to eight o'clock the fire-bell rang out its summons, and it then became known that a building situated almost opposite to the site of Mr Rutherford'^ mill had somehow become ignited. A very large crowd assembled, but not a hand was lifted io endeavour to save the building on fire, or the one olo3e adjoining, It wag only when the first building was nearly down that the adjoining bouse caught, first from sparks on the shingles. The property is owned by Mr Samuel Lane, and has been nuoccupied a short time. The larger building, the one that was firat on firo, wa? a six-roomed twostoried building, and the other building had three rooms. The property at one time belonged to the late Mi* William Atkins. The property was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £75. We do not know whether any inquiry wiil be held. At five o'clock yesterday morning the echoolhouse 'at Taikorea was destroyed by fire.
