Orchard and Garden Pests.

The Minister of Lands has introduced a Bill dealing with the eradicaion of oixhard and garden pests. It provides that on the discovery of any of the pests mentioned in the Bill, the owner or occupier of any garden or orchaid must at once inform the Minister. An Inspector wilt vL>c in ;.•'■■ cc, and, if necessary, proclaim it mijeted, and no plants can then be removed. The Inspector may take such steps a? he thinks advisable for the eradication of the disease. These steps, however, are limited by Order-in-Couacil. No compensation is payable for damage done by the Inspector in such eradication. The diseases and pesis under the proposed measure are — Apple scab, potato fungus, codlin moth, American blight, and vine louse or phylloxera.

The Government Pomologists are to be the Inspectors under the Bill.
