Nearly a Case of Drowning.
«- . Yesterday morning what might have very easily bave resulted in a fatal calamity occurred on tbe bank of the river. A son of Mr Overend, Herbert, a lad of eight years of age, went down to the river to watch the flood, and, to get a belter view walked along tho stone groin just where Mr Bauckham is building the steam launch. When at the end of the groin the lad slipped into the water and someone standing on the road bank called out to Mr Bauckham who was fortunately working at his vice which is close to the groin, that the lad had slipped in. Without the loss of a moment Mr Bauckham ran along the groin and saw the lad go under, and noting the spot, he waded into the water ap to his waist, anything but a sate position, remembering the scour and swirl of the flood, and just after the lad had risen and sunk onoe more was enabled to catch him and bring him to shore. We are glad to say that the lad, though frightened, wa3 none the worse for the ducking, the more ia Mr Bauckham, who, being a good swimmer, was not in the least flustered. However Mr Bauckham deserves every credit for his action. We are requested by Mr Overend, the father of the lad, to publicly acknowledge f. hia obligations to Mr Bauckham, and to thank him most sincerely for his act.
