Serious Accident on the Manawatu Railway.
The mixed train which left Palmerston for Wellington on Tussday morning met with a serious accident at tbe Wellington end of the tunnel at this side of Paikakariki. Through a slip which had oc•nrred the engine ran off the line, and fell over an embankment about Jflft. in height, taking with it four goods waggons. Five other waggons were derailed, bni the three passengers' cars and tht guard's van, which made up the kail end of the train, did not leave the rails. Before the slip was noticed the train had run into it, and although atery effort was made to pull up, the engine went nearly two chains after leaving the rails before it went over the embankment. The engine-driver, McLeod, and fireman Nott, stuck bravely to their posts, and went over with the engine. The latter escaped unhurt, bat McLeod received a bad shaking. mTSmes.
