wicket very fast. There was an enormous attendance. Owing to the condition of the ground, Gunn and Richardson were at the last moment chosen to replace Peel and Wainwright in the -English team. St. James' Gazette, referring to the personnel of the team, says England has never put a finer eleven in the field. The Australians won the toss, and decided to bat, but made a very feeble stand, the whole team being I disposed of for the small score of 53. j The English Eleven began their first innings, and have compiled 286 runs. for eight wickets. Richardson and Lohmann only bowled 11 overs each in getting nd of the Australians. The attendance in the afternoon numbered 90,000, of whom 25,400 paid for admission. The crowd was so enormous that the spectators encroached ten yards on the playing space all round.
