The Tramway.
The troubles in connection with the Carnarvon-Sanson Tramway are not yet finished, and we should not have re-opened this matter just at once had not the action of the Manawatu County Council demanded endorsement by the Borough Council. The history of the London Syndicate is still fresh in the minds of all, as well as the humiliation placed upon us by the " excellent fooling " of the Premier in this matter. Of course to those who are put in authority by tha ratepayers to look after their interests the tactics of the Government are very galling and every effort has to be made to prevent disaster falling on vs v The Government of the day, by Act of Parliament, deolared that tha inhabitants of the County could Bell the Tramway. When the inhabitants had succeeded in doing so to Mr Hunt and others interested with him, the Government stepped in and refused to allow the bargain to be oarried out., .We "will allow any Government organ to argue around this as much as they like without wasting time in replying, as those whose shoe it pinches know our contention is the true one. The hard and fast fact remains that whereas under Statute the Manawatu County and the Foxton Borough should have been now in receipt of some thousands of pounds by the sale of this Tramway, which could have been usefully used in road formation, they have also lost the expenditure of the greater part of £200,000 the company had proposed to raise. It must be evident to the meanness comprehension that the County and the Borough have been unfairly deprived of this money by the Government and a deputation from the County intends to represent this view to the Premier, and it would appear wise if the Borough Council lent its aid as well.
