Otaki Licensing Committee.
The annual meeting of the above Committee was held at Otaki yesterday, at noon. Present —R. L. Stanford, S.M. (chairman), Messrs Thynne, Pearce, Stuckey, Bennett, McCulloch, Smith and Mason. Prior to entering Court the committee had a private meeting. At the commencement of the public business the Chairman said a circular had appeared in the Gazette of April 15 from the Commissioner of Police as follows : —" In continuation of Circular 25, of October 14th, 1887, Inspector in charga of districts are requested to point out to Licensing Committees the advisableness of all hotels consisting of two or more storeys being provided with a ladder of sufficient length to reach to the second storey, such ladder to be kept outside in a place which is accessible at all times and to be secured by lock and chain of such strength that they can easily be broken in caie of fire." This the Committee had considered and resolved that the pro* posal of the Commissioner be not entertained if all hotels have two staircases and ropea to each upstairs room. The Inspectors of Licensed houses are requested to see if ropea are provided as previously ordered. The Chairman also stated that all licensed houses in the district are to provide stabling accommodation. That was the terms on which licenses would be granted. The following new licenses were granted I— Otaki — Hakaraia Te Whena, Central Hotel; Edward George McDermott, Family Hotel. Levin—Robert Buckeridge, Levin Hotel. Pahautanui—James McOormaok, Pahautanui Hotel. Sao3ou —Joseph William Hands, Junction Hotel. Trentham—Samuel Carlson, Trentham Railway Hotel. Lower flufct — Michael Sylvester Duffy, Taita Hotel. The following Renewals were granted :— Otaki—Dennis Quill, for Railway HotelGeorge Mcßeatb, Jubilee Hotel. Hbnry Wider Sharp, Telegraph Hotel. Foxfcon—-Henry Border, Family Hotel. John Rainbow Stansell, Whyte'i Hotel. Charles Arthur Harrison, Manawatu Hotel. Shannon—Archibald Keith, Albion Hotel. Michael Moynihan, Wellington and Manawatu Hotel. Paikakariki—Charles Slight, Paikakariki Hotel. Levin—John Gettes Campbell, Wereroa Hotel. Manakau — William Torapsitt, Family Hotel. Upper Hutt — George Herbert Langdon, Provincial Hotel. The following transfers were granted: — Otaki—Thomas A. King, to Edward George McDermott, for Family Hotel. Taita—Official Assignee to Michael Sylvester Duffy, for Traveller's Ra»t Hotel. Trentham- Francis Paul to tyamuel Carlson, for Railway Hotel. On the application for a new license being brought on for hearing for the Post Office Hotel, Foxton, Mr Hawkins appeared for the appli-> cant, Mr Ray for Mr George Gray, one of the owners of the property, and Constable Gillespie as Inspector of licensed houses. The Chairman said grave oharges had been made in the report about the conduct of the house, which were as follows :•— " Conducted in a loose, drunken,' disorderly mannv lift:* present applicant took charge." The Inspector, on oath, made charges of drunkenness and misconduct, and Mr Monensen, on oath, denied the statements. MrGaorge Gray was called and deolared he had not heard of any misconduct at the house though living next door. The Court was cleared, and on resuming the Chairman stated the Committee had resolved " That this matter b* adjourned for further 14 days for further evidence," and the case would be really adjourned for another 14 days thus making the date the Ist July. This concluded the business.
