A syndicate has purchased the Taranaki ironsand rights from Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R. The syndicate proposes to float a company with a working capital of £45,000. Sir John Millais, the well-known painter, is dying. Delegates at the Miners' Conference, representing three hundred thousand men, demanded the nationalisation of the mines. At the instance of Sir S. Samuel, the Australian Agents-General will interview Mr Chamberlain and Sir M. Hicks Beach, with a request that the Government amend the Finance Bill, in order to prevent the levying of income tax on incomes on which taxation has already been paid in the colonies.
