It is always a pleasure to us to note outward and visible signs of social progress in the community. Unmistakably the spread of temperance , is one of these, and we are pleased therefore to learn from a good authority that the temperance cause is, in this town and neighbourhood, ads vancing •' by leaps and bounds." At the meeting of the local lodge of | jiood Templars on Thursday evening last there were no less than seventeen applications for membership, a fact which must be very cheering to the worthy Chief Templar and all lovers of the Order. The Lodg&is already taking a lively and intelligent interest in the prospects of candidates for the Ojaki electorate at the great trial of strength in November next, aud has a watchful , eye besides on the forth coming meeting of the Licensing Bench at I Otaki, when aomo matters of the I gravest importance to the orderly I people of this town will ba under consideration. i
