Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1896. Aspiring Politicians.

Oyr remarks on the unlikelihood of so many Liberal candidates being permitted to stand for this electorate at the next general election have not been received . kindly by those most concerned. Naturally, from a business point of view, more candidates more profits, but as we enjoy a fair political fight whether we are in it personally, or only as a partisan, we cannot reconcile the idea of three or four Liberal candidates treading on one another's heels over the district in contention with one Opposition candidate. Government orsuns may do all they know to try and get one of Mr Wilson's political colour al«o to contest the seat but it will not be successful, for as long as Mr Wilson desires to be our repre sentafcive no one, of his views, de«

sires to oust him. Therefore, even to a Government organ, it must be plain that to urge so many candidates forward is most suicidal, unless, of course, it is at once admitted no Liberal has a show, and therefore the fun of giving some aspiring poli ticians a run over the conrse can be indulged in without any re&l harm arising froih it. Otherwise the endorsement of tmch a course is a most serious action oq tile part of any newspaper, claiming to hold a real interest in the welfare of any political pirty. A wink is said to be as good as ft. nod to a hlincl hnrsp and ppr. hatis the sub-leader iv the Premier's \Wl : iugri>n.or4iu), hpudeii " Po'iUca' Discipline " may have a culming t-fivct; both on energetic candidates and their local organs. " Discipline," mark you, must be maintained, and referring to another colony thiwriter continues " it is a reminder, and a very strong reminder, to the Liberals of Npw Zealand to stand shoulder to shoulder " not ac a multitude of candidates, but as a body •■»f electors supporting one candidate. In is thus made very plain to all Liberals that no such nonsense n? Miree Liberals contesting a seat will be permitted by the Premier, thus jusrifying everything we have said as to the unlikelihood of all the candidates mentioned as being de sirou* of rpresenting this electorate coming to the poll.
