Chess and Draughts Club.
The chess club was opened last night with a large attendance of members and friends, close on forty being there. The two rooms secured in the building lately occupied by Mr Walla were well lighted and good fires were kept up by Mr Johnston, the newlyappointed caretaker. The secretary, Mr Alf. Fraser,
wa? present and received a number of illustrated papers and periodicals on loan for the use of the club members. The Rev. George Aitkens and Mr Stuart played their six games of chess and draughts respectively with all comers and came out triumphant. The next tussle will not probably re* suit in this manner. The rooms were closed at 10, and will be open three nights in the week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridayu from 7.80 to 10 p.m. The readiug-room will be open every day. .We are glad to record suoh a successful commencement.
