Chess and Draughts Club.
A meeting of those interested in forming the above was held at Stansell's Hotel on Tuesday night. About thirty gentlemen were present. Mr Washington Stewart was voted to the chair. Mr John Stewart (the convener), then explained the object of the ixeeting, and it was decided to start a club at onca. The subscription to be 6a for the season. J^Swenty-eis. name 3 of intending 'tremberi Woi'e handed in.
The following officers were then elected :- President, Mr Walter Bobinson 3 . V^e-presi^ents; Messrs Tbynne and Nixon ; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr A. Fraser ; Committee, Rev Aitkens, Jas. Andrews, Curtis, Hamer, Johnstone and Jno. Stewart; jand the. pfflce bearers. Captain of Chess, Mr Imrie ,' captain of Draughts, Mr Jno. Stewart. The committee was instructed to wait pb the Borough Council and to ask thefai for the rise of the library room. Failing that to find some other suitable room and draw up a set of rules and regulations and present th.em at another general meet ing to be held at Staflsell's hotel on Tuesday next at 8 p.m. Several gentlemen promised to give or lend periodicals and papers for the use of the members. A vote of thanks to the cnair closed the proceedings. Since the meeting a number of others have intimated their willingness to become members and it is expected the membership will soon be up to thirty-five. Tfcia. committee hope to have the club in full swing within a fortnight.
