-•" V Captain McGiffen of the CUineae ironclad Chn Yuen has been interviewed by the Strand Magazine representative. Captain McGiffen was in the naval battle off the Yalu river which resulted in the victory of the Japanese. The Captain haa the highest opinion of the courage and hardihood of the common sailor, but utter contempt for the officer. They belong to the Mandarin class, and it is not part of their aim or tradition to be brave and manly, and they are not. This Oaptain McGiffen is of course a Scotchman, born in America, for where on earth 13 a Scotchman not to be found. He is a very interesting narrative, and to enable the readers to believe it all we quote another exceedingly true yarn. Thug as proof that an alligator is not only a shrewd, but a thinking animal, it is stated that the alligators of the Orinoco, previous to going in searoh of prey, always swallow large stones, that they may acquire additional weight to aid them in dragging their prey undar water. Bolivar, the traveller, is said to have verified this statement by shooting several of the saurians, in which stones were found.
