The French Government has decided to expend 1,000,000 francs in the representation of France at the coronation of the Czar in Moscow. Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria is on a visit to Rome. The Pope has refased the request of the Prince to sanction the baptism of his infant son Boris in the Orthodox Greek faith. Germany reiterates her demand on the Venezuela Republic for the payment of the railway guarantee. President Kruger has proclaimed his intention of closing the mines, his excuse being that this step is necessary owing to the continuance of commotion in the Transvaal. He says the Government will guarantee the protection of the industry, and facilitate native labour. In the Senate Mr Lilltnan delivered a speech in which he furiously attacked President Cleveland's currency scheme. Ho called the President a traitor and a charlatan, and accused him of using his office for private gain. The speech has caused a great sensation. Further particulars show that before the evacuation of- Fort Makaleh by the Italians a final assault was made by the Abyssinian bosiegars upon the garrison, which had previously bean reduced almost to starvation. Major Galliano, the Commandant, allowed the Shoas to attempt to scale the walls, pretending that the garrison wa3 powerless to. offer any defence. Suddenly, howover, tha Maxim gund and repeating rifles opened fire on the assailant*, with such deadly effect that uo less than 1500 are believed to have bf-en killed.* Afterwards terms were come to for the evacuation of the ion, and j Ra& Makocen, the Abyssinian chief, escorted" Galliano and his troops to Adigrat, the Italian headquarters. This was . done to prevent an attack and possible further bloodshed by the Anparas natives. Major Galliano blew up the fort before leaving it.
