On board a barque at Lyttleton two bales of wool were discovered to be on fire, the result of spontaneous combustion. Mr Frank Gay has The Artist now in his care and training. A man bought an iron barque the other day in Wellington for £14 10s. She was the Halcione and lies under the waves, which takes off the cheap appearance of the deal. Horrible news still coming from New South Wales — Devastating bush fires ; fruit trees withered by the heat ; crops ruined ; stook dying in large numbers ! In the northern distriots of South Australia the heat has been as high as 117 degrees. A notice about apples appears in to-day's issue from the proprietor of the Kawaroa orchard. Messrs Gorton and Son hold a clearing sale of dairy stook near Colyton on Monday. On Saturday Messrs Abraham and Williams hold a horse sale at Palmerston. An English paper says:— The saying that " good wine needs no bush " has come true in the case of Australian wines, the importation of which into England is increasing by leaps and bounds. They are, as a rule, such excellent tipple, being absolutely pure, very invigorating, and very palatable, that I make sure a ready sale for them would be found by any " wine from the wood " Bhop which tried the experiment. It would be a grand thing if some portion of the enormous sura which we now send to the continent in exchange for wine were transferred to Australia, Tasmania, and Cape Colony. Dr Maurier has been offered £10,000 for his next novel, upon which he is at present hard at work. The "Ben Bolt" song which belongs to the story and iB hummed in the play has been reprinted in America, and has sold over 100,000 copies. At 8-30 on Monday morning the thermometer reached the unprecedented height of 95-8, and increased rapidly until it ' registered 108-5 at Sydney. Horses dropped dead in the street. The Agent-General has been instructed to engage a suitable man in London to furnish regular reports to the Government after the manner which Mr S Lowe was accustomed to do, of New Zealand produce sent Home to the British market. It is stated that the demolition of the Invalides has been practically decided upon. There is no "show" place in Paris better known to the English public, and the question of the disposition of the remains of Napoleon I. will excite a worldwide interest. Mr Richard Gray has an advertisement about his raspberry syrup. Mr and Mrs Allan Strang returned to the polony by the s.s. Gothic, which reached Wellington on Saturday. It is stated on excellent authority that the Empress of Austria smokes on an average about thirty cigarettes a day, the first at 4 o'clock a.m. immediately after her breakfast, which she is in the habit of taking at half-past three a.m. Queen Margherita of Italy smokes almost constantly on her Alpine tours, but otherwise rarely mtire than two ot three cigarettes a day. The Dowager Queen of Portugal is said to be an inveterate smoker, and twists her «« cigarillbs " with one hand. Princess Laetitia, the Dowager Duchess of Aasta, is an artistic smoker, and can readily make three or four rings. The Eev. G. Aitkens has. let the contract for the supply of labour and nails in the erection of a church at Levin to Mr A. Speirs of this town, at £79. The timber and other nmterialß are supplied by the committee. The other tenders received for the erection of a church at Levin were : Williamson of Levin at £107, and Eochelle of Campbelltown at £106. It is hoped that the Bishop of Wellington will be able to lay the foundation block of the new church at Levin on the 29th instant. The present position of the fruit-growing industry in Victoria is far from being satis' factory. Encouraged by a. planting bonus amounting to £3 per acre, the area under orchard fruits has increased so rapidly during the past five years that it can be safely estimated at about 50,000 acres. Mr McMillan having resigned the agency of the Anchor line of steamers Mr W. B, Bhodes has been appointed to the Vacancy. A splendid small 10-acre farm is advertised to let on which is a substantial dwelling. The land is some of the best in the district. There should be no difficulty in parting with it. Mr McMillan's Bale of furniture yesterday was a great success, all the lots being quitted under the hammer* The Queen of the South arrived this morning from Picton.
