Automatic Bellman.
Most of the old English churohes have special attractions, and some of them have curiosities which visitors g:> miles -to i see. Such a local attraction is the gioteq leiooking figure in the pari-h church of Southwold, near L »we^tofc. It i? a life size •ffigy yf a warrior ot the olden time,
clad in armour from head to foot. It is made of oak, and is a capital specimen of the carver's handicraft. It stands in the church just over the vestry screen, and when the clergyman is about to enter the church this quaint old wooden figure is made to strike a bell with a battle* axa. This is done some 10 or 12 times. It is set in motion by the sexton pulling a rope which if attached to the right arm of the figure, and thus it is made to do duty before every service. Probably in all England there is not another such an old fashioned bellman as thif at Sonthwold.
