One night two tramps, Pat and Hans were exceedingly hungry, and had called at a farmhouse, the owner ot which would give them a lodging but no food. So to bed they went supperless. About 11 o'clock Hans went softly down to the pantry. Having eaten a hearty meal, he returned, being compelled to pass through the farmer's bed-chamber. When he got back Pat questioned him as to how he had done it. " An' did ye not wake the ould man up ?" he said. 11 Ya,' 1 answered Hans ; " but I yoost stant shtill, und say, " Miaou, xniaou !" " Begorra," said Pat, •• I'll do the same raeself." As he entered the farmer's room, he stumbled over a chair and woke the farmer, who cried out, angrily : " Who's there ?" " Oh, lay still !" said Pat. " Oim the cat!"

The steamer lona, from Leith to London, caught fire and burned for two hoars. The passengers were asleep 6t the time, and when roused a panid.ensued. Many were injured in the rush for boats. Seven ladies perished, including the stewardess, who was trying to rescue others. The fire began in the ladies' cabin. Forty-eight men were rescued . J onas, a steward, states the reason the unfortunate women were burned was that egress from the cabin was closed and they were unable to force their way through the flames. According to the correspondent of the Lyttelton Times it ia thought the Government will make four or five appointments to the Legislative Counoil, and if Sir George Grey should return to the colony he will be one of the number.
