Fire at Hawera.
On Thursday night a most disastrous fire broke out at Haweva, in which 17 buildings were destroyed, and two persons were burned to death. The fire started in the premises of C. Smith, draper, and was caused either by a lamp capsizing or falling from tnVcfeiling and exploding. The buildings destroyed are : Smith'? draper's shop, the Egmont Hotel, Commercial Hotel sample room, Faber's livery stables, the Star >• office, an empty shop, Kemp's (grocer), Cummins (draper), Levin's (hairdresser), Caplen's solicitor, Newsham's billiard room, Parrington's spirit store, Simmonds (bootmaker), the new Post Office and the Courthouse.
