A Lady's Letter.
Wellington, Aug* 24, 1895. With the exception of Lady Stout's Musical " At Home " there is very little social news for you this week, however I will begin by telling you of the "At Home." There were a large number of guests, several of them being visitors here. The drawing-room was prettily decorated with large pots of mimosa, and the supper table looked charming with a crosspatfcern of orange coloured ribbon on the white cloth, the ribbon crossed in the centre and spread out in long lengths over the table, being kept in p"la<Je at intervals with a slander vase of daffodils, the eifect was altogether very pretty and would look equally well in other colours. Well to proceed, our hostess wore a very becoming black brocaded gown trimmed with lace and jet. Mrs Dowling (Dunedin), who is staying in the house wore black merveilleux, the corsage being heliotrope silk prettily striped with jet. Mrs Newmans gown was very milch admired and was of white satin and moire striped material, slightly trained and the bodice much trimmed with embroidered chiffon frills and she wore a quaint ruMe of white chiffon round th 9 bare throat ; Mrs -j. G. Wilson wore chocolate (lorded silk handsomely trimmed with very pale pink satin and ecru lace ; ' Mrs Menteath, very pale blue brocade trimmed with lace and handsome passementerie ; Mrs W. Johnston rich black velvet slightly trimmed with lovely old lace ; Mrs Cowen (Christchurch), black satin, trimmed on the bodice with white lace and cerise velvet ; Mrs JelHcJoe> lovely pale heliotrope brocade trimmed with ribbon velvet to match j Miss Russell, looked Well in white cre'poti trimmed with Very pale sea green ribbon and ecru insertion ; Miss Hislop, white sdrah silk with rnMss of striped chiffon | Miss Reynolds (Dunedin), heliotrope merveilleux, the sleeves and bodice being draped with accordian chiffon to match ; Miss Burnea, very pretty white satin gown, trimmed with handsome jewelled embroidery and flowers; others I noticed were, Mesdames Butt, Haines, Iteid, Eose, McGregor, Fraser, and Goring, and the Misses Hutchison, Gore, Rose, Ros?, Blair, Halse, McLean, McGregor, etc. Those Who took an active part in the musical portion of the eveuing were Mrs Dowling* Mrs Butt, the Misses Burnesj Ross, and Coney who Sang, and Mrs Butt, Miss Burnes and Mrs Coney playing pianoforte pieces. Very clever recitations were given by Dr Findlay and Miss Daly, so you see we had plenty of amusement and Were quite sorry when the time came to say good night to our popular host and hostess. Lady Glasgow, accompanied by Captain Preston, returned from Auckland on Friday last, being absent just a week. Lady Augusta Boyle I believe will remain away a few more Weelw. There is to be a ball at Government House next Thursday and the following Thursday a reception. I also hear of other dances in prospect so we have not yet, I am glad to say, finished our festivities. Everybody, or at least nearly everybody, here is enthusiastic over Golf just now. The new links at Miramir are beginning to get into good order and on Saturdays quite a crowd is to be seen wending its way out there, and conveyances are kept running all the afternoon. I believe that the Golf championship of New Zealand is to be played this year on the Hutt Links, these being in better condition than at Miramar. In my next letter, or very soon after, I hope to be able to tell you about all the latest Spring novelties at the drapers' shops. Siona.
