TUESDAY, AUGUST 20, The Speaker took the obair- at 2.30 p.m. Mr Buohanau, the ohairman of fchff House section of the Joint Bank Committee, brought up an interim report of the committee, recommending that the proceedings of the com* mittee should be secret. He moved the adoption of the report. ■ Dr Newman wanted to know the meaning of the term secret in the present case. The Speaker explained that a secret committee meant the exclusion of members and the public from the committee, and that the evidence^ taken would not be made public. The Premier moved to add to the motion that the names of Meisrs Pinkerton, Fraser and Millar be added to the committee. This he did in compliance with a generally , expressed opinion that the number of the commmittee should be increased, A debate followed, member* gene- j rally expressing their opinions (n? favour of the favour of the committee being a secret one. Mr J. W. Kelly moved to strike out the name of Mr Millar and add that of Mr R. Thompson. The Premier said he could not accept this amendment. On division Mr Kelly's amendment was lost by 28 to 24. The Premire's amendment was then put and carried by 29 to 25, and the original motion as amended, was then carried on the voices. V * The financial debate was continued and ended in Mr Ward re* > plying. . ■ The House then went into com* mittee of supply on the Estimates, and progress reported. The amendments made in the Evidence Further Amendment Bill, Animals Protection Bill, and the Native Townships Bill were agreed to.
