Foxton Lawn Tennis Club.

» The annual meeting of the above was held at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening afc 8 o'clock. There was a good attendance of members, and Mr W. S. Stewart occupied the chair. Mr Curtis, who acted as Secretary pro tern, read the minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed. The report for the past year was read as follow? : — BEFOBT OF THE FOXTON TENNIS CLVB, AUGUST, 1895. Ladies and Gentlemen — A3 you are all doubtless aware the Club for part of the past year has been short of the full complement of office bearers. We have lately lost one of our esteemed vice presidents, Mr Steele, and the committee wish to have placed on record an expression of the deep sense of the loss the Club has sustained thereby. Since our last annual meeting we have also lost the services of Dr Dermer our late energetic Secretary, who while with us was ever ready to try and aasist forward the mtereota of i the Club giQirftlly. Hl* depart

was without doubt a loss to the Club. Mr Howard who then took up the position, of secretary had rather a short official life with us* He also was one we could ill spare. On Mr Howard's retirement there Was so very short a period of time then to elapse before the close of the financial year that the Committee judged it better to carry on the affairs of the Club for that time without the aid of a new Secretary. , You all know that since our last annual meeting we have had completed the asphalt court. It is now in good working order and giving very fair satisfaction. Whether it will well withstand the effects of the heat of summer remains to be seen. The committee however does not anticipate that any great expense will have to be incurred this ooming season in. connection with this court. The clay court will probably require a small outlay to put it in thoroughly good order at the commencement of the season. During the past year unsuccessful efforts were made to inaugurate ft series of matches with other Tennis Clubs. With that object in view communications were exchanged with the clubs at Sanson, Bulk and Levin but to no purpose as all negotiations came to nothing. It is now hoped, however, that during the coming season further attempts in the same direction will be made and that these efforts may bt crowned with success. There is every probability that the expenses during the coming year will be abnormally low. The com* mi I tee therefore think they are justified in anticipating a prosperous season financially. George Aitkens, Mary Purceix, W. T. Little, P. Curtis. The balance sheet was also submitted, which showed a balance of £5 Os 2d in hand. The report and balance sheet were adopted, and the election of officers was proceeded with, and resulted as follows :— President, Mr J. G. Wilson (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs E. S. Thynne (re-elected), and W. P. Stewart ; Mr P. Curtis, hon. secretary ; committee, Messrs Little. Eure, Cook and Cowles ; auditor, Mr England. It was proposed, That the subscriptions for the present year be reduced on a sliding scale all round. After some discussion, in whiob it was shown that the club would not suffer by such a reduction, the - resolution was put and carried unank mously. It was resolved, That in future Tuesday afternoons be open to ladies. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the past officers of the club and also to the ladies who dispensed afternoon tea during the session. After some business of a minor nature bad been discussed, the meeting adjourned with a vote of thanks to the chair.
