An Interesting Discovery.

An interesting discovery has been made at Bradshaw's Creek, in the Northern Territory. A baobab tree has been found bearing the inscription " October 9," with the figures "15" or "75," and signed "Fred Adams, Southampton." Other characters, of which the writing is indistinct, have also been discovered; It is thought the inscription must have been cut either in the year 1775 or 1815. As both dates belong to an earlier period than any recorded exploration of the territory, it was probably made by one of a ship's crew in search of water. At spring tide a vessel of light draught could navigate the creek to the vicinity of the tree, which is 100 miles from the coast. Or the words may have been cut by a shipwrecked crew in search of food. With reference to the discovery of the marked tree at Bradshaw's Creek, it is suggested that Adams was one of Leichardt's lost expedition, which was in the vicinity in 1845, and that the third figure of * the date has been misread.— Press Association.
